Reading about Kenya

I am advising a student who is interested in exploring development issues in Kenya.  So here is a top-five list of books to read.

• David William Cohen and E. S. Atieno Odhiambo, Burying SM: The Politics of Knowledge and the Sociology of Power in Africa.
• Jomo Kenyatta, Facing Mount Kenya.
• Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, A Grain of Wheat.
• Binyavanga Wainaina, One Day I Will Write About This Place.
• Michaela Wrong, It’s Our Turn to Eat: The Story of a Kenyan Whistle-Blower.
• And for blogging, one suggestion is Ken Opalo, now at Georgetown University.
